Almost a Revolution by Shen Tong5/27/2023 ![]() ![]() Author tour.Ĭopyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. No one who cares about modern China should miss this document. Now living near Boston, Shen Tong saw firsthand what others have since confirmed: most of the thousands gunned down on the approaches to the square were not students but workers. The book's second half is a heartbreaking and electrifying journal of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre and the two months of protests leading up to it. He discovers Beethoven, Gandhi, Einstein and sexual love. His parents, reluctant members of the People's Liberation Army, are labeled "counterrevolutionary collaborators" for copying political poems. The first half of the book is straightforward, limpid narrative. ![]() Told with modesty and wisdom, written with former Washington Post reporter Yen, his remarkable autobiography is also a spiritual history of China's struggle for human rights. Shen Tong was a student leader in China's pro-democracy movement whose dreams were crushed in the Tiananmen Square massacre. ![]()

![]() ![]() Twelve Keys by Basil Valentine is a sequence of alchemical operations encoded allegorically, in words to which images have been added. The keys are written in such a fashion as to conceal as well as to illuminate: only a knowledgeable reader or alchemical adept was expected to correctly interpret the veiled language of the allegorical text and its related images. With each step, the symbolic names (Deckname, or code name) used to indicate the critical ingredients are changed, just as the ingredients themselves are transformed. Each chapter, or "key", is an allegorical description of one step in the process by which the philosopher's stone may be created. The second half contains twelve short chapters. The first part of the book is a discussion of general alchemical principles and advice about the philosopher's stone. The Basil Valentine writings provide twelve "keys", a widely reproduced sequence of alchemical operations encoded allegorically, in words to which images have been added. ![]() We only index and link to content provided by other sites.įully illustrated. Logan and grace the mistake5/27/2023 ![]() I had a really positive experience reading this so it has me really excited to read book 2! I really appreciated his character development and how he reacted to Hannah and helped her throughout the book, and in turn how she helped him. This was genuinely my favourite read through this time and I’m so glad about that! This was cheesy and had some darker moments (check TWs) but I really enjoyed it overall! I really liked Hannah and Garrett’s story, though it definitely took me until around the halfway point to actually start liking Garrett as a character (also what an awful name, who names someone Garrett? No offence to the Garrattes of the world). ![]() ![]() ![]() I’ve now read this book 3 times because that’s how many times I’ve told myself I’m going to actually go through with it and fully read this series! We’ll see if that happens this time or not… □ ![]()

![]() ![]() Armed with curiosity and just a dash of hurt ethnic pride I took to the place us amateur scholars go to for research: Google. Even more depressing is the fact how easily I was ready to accept this lack of representation in the book world as something normal. ![]() Saying that, “Well, nobody knows about us, and that’s just the way it is” is throwing in the towel before the fight even starts. This lack of interest in Central Asian culture and literature comes from the lack of representation, and not the other way around. There are cultural trends and movements that the rest of the world isn’t aware of. Yet, as far as regions go, Central Asia has so much going on. That’s over four million square kilometers of a whole big nothing. ![]() When it comes to cultural awareness Central Asia is but a blank space on the map for most people outside the “region”. The first answer that came to mind, an almost intuitive response was “Well, because nobody knows about Central Asia”. ![]() And as I was writing this very apologetic response, I had to ask myself why authors from Central Asia are so underrepresented on the literary market. I had to be honest with them and tell them that I know very little about contemporary authors from Kazakhstan and Central Asia. They had read my review of The Silent Steppe by Mukhamet Shayakhmetov and were asking me for recommendations. A couple of weeks ago, I got a message on Goodreads from a Kazakh-American who was looking for Kazakh and Central Asian authors. ![]()

Oedipus the king of thebes5/26/2023 ![]() At the end of his servitude, he married Harmonia, the daughter of Ares and Aphrodite. However, the dragon had been sacred to Ares, and, as punishment, Cadmus had to serve Ares for one year (or eight years). In the end, only five men, Oudaios, Chthonios, Echion, Pelor, and Hyperenor, survived and became the ancestors of the aristocratic families of Thebes. ![]() ![]() ![]() Each man thought that another one had attacked him, and they all fought. Up sprang armed men, and in fear, Cadmus threw a stone in their midst. Cadmus then killed the dragon and, at the suggestion of Athena, sowed half of the dragon's teeth in the ground. They all failed in their search, and while his brothers went on to found colonies of their own, Cadmus went to Delphi where the oracle told him to give up the search, find a cow with special markings, follow it, and found a city where it stopped to rest.Ĭadmus wanted to sacrifice the cow to Athena (or Zeus), and sent men to the spring of Aretias to fetch water, but a dragon guarding the place killed them. The Phoenician princess Europa was carried off over the sea by a bull, and her father, Agenor, commanded his sons, including Cadmus, to find her. ![]() According to most popular legend, though there are variations in different sources, Thebes was founded this way. ![]()
